Meditation has become an aforementioned tool for stress management. Meditation is a practice of sitting and being still in the moment. With a focus on breathing, there is an increase in personal awareness. Clinicians oftentimes recommend mediation as a daily life practice with the help from online resources and phone apps. There are wonderful means to make meditation seem easier than even just simply finding enough time to sit alone. Books such as “Breath Like a Bear,” by Annie Betts help entire families leverage meditation without it seeming like a chore or a foreign challenge. Instead, there is interest and then engagement as you challenge your kids to “Be a Bumblebee” as one of the meditations is called. |

Getting the entire family active can provide many lifestyle benefits to both parents and kids alike. With a wealth of information, it is easy to understand the benefits of both cardiovascular and strength training exercises for adults. From improved mood to greater bone health, visiting the gym is almost a no brainer. Of course, movement in childhood is beneficial. Specific to children, physical activity should be fun and engaging. A game of tag with friends, a family bike ride and sports leagues are all adequate ways to encourage movement. Functional movement, which simulates real life muscle use, in kids can also be advantageous and is a precursor to strength training that may take place later on in life. Some kid-friendly functional exercises include swinging across the money bars and hopscotch, as examples. Ask your kids about their PE classes and you just might find that they are getting in functional training already through activities like “Jump Rope for Heart,” an American Heart Association healthy annual initiative. All of this being said, your typical gym is not the best place for kids. Besides lacking the general elements of fun and games, gyms boast complex equipment that is not made for youth. |

There are many factors that can cause abdominal bloating. If you occasionally have a day where your bloating is worsened, consider a few key dietary changes that can help. Start by cutting back on your portion sizes of beans, lentils and vegetables from the cabbage family. You may also consider limiting carbonated beverages. In general, slowing down at mealtimes helps. Eat slowly and do not use straws for beverages. Treat bloating like a food intolerance and keep a food diary of any foods that cause you significant bloating or gas and in what quantities. This will help you navigate meals in the future without making any significant lifestyle changes. |
