In recent years, the United States has generated more than 260 million tons of waste annually. Of this total waste, about 25 percent was recycled and nearly 10 percent was composted. Of the food specific waste, only six percent was composted leaving much room for improvement. Community focused enterprises such as community gardens and businesses such as Compost Now are beginning to make earth friendly tasks easier and more accessible to everyone. Organizations and websites such as KidsGardening.org provide resources such as garden-based activities and lessons that incorporate varying earth friendly initiatives. From container gardening to creating your own mini landfills, the internet abounds with fantastic Earth Day initiatives. Plan ahead for Earth Day 2021! If you have an older child, task them with planning an Earth Day activity for a younger group. These types of activities can be practiced safely outdoors. |

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it a myriad of disordered behaviors. For pre-teens and teens, social engagement has dramatically changed to be online centric whereby extracurricular activities are still waning. Increased free time combined with greater stretches of time spent online oftentimes leaves kids feeling “emotionally empty,” as Dr. Saunders from the Hartford Health Care Behavior Network phrased it. Social media engagement elicits in individuals a need to compare themselves or their lives to others’. Brain development is significant during this time as well. Quality experiences and connections are critical to core social development needs. A few approaches to improve outcomes during times of extended quarantine include providing opportunities for interactive play (e.g., organize both at home and online game nights where challenges and social skills will be engaged), understand what your child’s core social media influences are (e.g., are they positive or negative online influences?) and getting outdoors. |
