Did you know that protein can be found in both animal and plant sources? While animal-based protein sources are a nutritious option, there are some plant sources of protein that are particularly nutrient-dense and do not provide the saturated fat and cholesterol that animal-based foods have.
Beans and legumes are one example of plant-based foods with significant protein content. In addition to packing a protein punch, beans and legumes are also rich in fiber, folate, iron, manganese, thiamine and other important vitamins and minerals. According to the American Heart Association, there is evidence that the consumption of beans and legumes may improve cholesterol levels and heart health along with gut health and digestion. An important tip when buying and using canned beans is to drain and rinse your beans to wash away any added salt or simply buy no added salt options.

Most people associate drinking more water and staying hydrated with the hot summer months when we are more likely to feel thirsty due to warmer temperatures and excess sweat production. While this is true, staying hydrated is just as important during the winter as it is in the summer! The human body requires the same amount of hydration and water needs throughout the year, however, during colder weather months our thirst response actually decreases by 40% causing people to be more chronically dehydrated. Dehydration can have negative side effects on the human body such as dry skin, mood change, fatigue and constipation. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women. Keep in mind that about 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food. Eating hydrating foods such as melons, oranges, zucchini, cucumber and soups will aid in hydration. Be sure to consider increased hydration needs when exercising. |
