The gut microbiome is all of the microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tract. This includes bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. The microbiota in the gut play an important role in vitamin, mineral, and macronutrient absorption as well as the synthesis of enzymes, and the production of short-chain fatty acids. Many factors impact the growth, development, and balance of the gut microbiome. Diet is a controllable factor and very influential in affecting the composition of the microbiota. One contributor to gut health is the consumption of dietary soluble and fermentable fiber. Sources include fruits, vegetables, and other plant sources. Eating a diet rich in plant-based food and fiber can help maintain a healthy gut. There is limited research evidence showing that the bacteria found in probiotics make it through the harsh acidic environment of the stomach to the small intestine. The best way is to optimize overall health by incorporating nutritious foods into the diet and participating in an active lifestyle. |

According to the USDA, processed foods are raw, farmed commodities that have been subject to any cleaning, milling, cutting, cooking, canning, freezing, drying, dehydrating, mixing, packaging or any other procedures that would alter the food from its natural state. This may include the addition of other ingredients to the food, such as preservatives, flavors, nutrients, salts, sugars and fats. Given this definition, there is a spectrum of processed foods from minimally (e.g., bagged salad or pre-cut vegetables) to heavily (e.g., chips) processed. It is recommended that individuals read nutrition labels to identify potential benefits or detriments to a processed food they may be considering. For example, one benefit of processed foods is that they can be nutritionally dense, such as breads that are fortified with healthy nutrients. In addition, they can be relatively convenient. On the other hand, some processed foods contain relatively high amounts of sodium. |

Vitamin D functions to help keep our bones strong, absorb calcium and work with the parathyroid gland. If an individual is not getting enough Vitamin D through diet or exposure to sunlight, they may experience symptoms such as fatigue, bone pain or muscle weakness. Dietary sources of Vitamin D include yogurt, salmon and orange juice. Individuals at higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency include breastfed infants, older adults, those with limited sun exposure and people with dark skin. |
